Something To Think About…

One day at lunch a group of preachers was discussing sermon preparation. One minister explained that he devoted the month of July to writing a year’s worth of sermons. Another preacher said that he outlined his weekly sermon on Monday’s and wrote on the following days. Still another preacher said that he set aside Wednesday mornings for preparation. A fourth preacher confessed to hurrying to meet his deadline late Saturday nights.

A fifth preacher had the final say. “I usually schedule a long hymn before the sermon.”

I think I have heard a few of those sermons! :) In all honesty though, good sermons require time and thought. It’s important to think before we speak. That’s true not only from the pulpit, but also in our daily lives. How many problems that you are facing right now would never have arisen if you had only taken the time to think things through before opening your mouth?

Solomon’s advice is still as valuable as it was when he gave it:

“Do not be rash with your mouth, and let not your heart utter anything hastily before God…..Therefore let your words be few…..A fool’s voice is known by his many words.” (Ecclesiastes 5:2-3)

May your words this day be well thought out!

Something To Think About…

As the story goes, while visiting a province he came upon a soldier in full uniform but with one sleeve hanging empty. He proudly wore the coveted Legion of Honor. Napoleon asked, “Where did you lose your arm?” The soldier answered, “At Austerlitz, sire.” Napoleon asked, “And for that you received the Legion of Honor?” The man said, “Yes, sire but it is a small token to pay for the decoration.” Napoleon continued, “You must be the kind of man who regrets he did not lose both arms for his country.” The one-armed man asked, “What then would have been my reward?” Napoleon answered, “I would have awarded you the Double Legion of Honor.” And with that, the proud old fighter drew his sword and immediately cut off his other arm.

What a great story! There’s only one problem. You may have already noticed the inconsistency. But apparently it was years before anyone dared ask Napoleon the question, “How did the soldier cut off his arm with only one arm to do it with?”

Nice story. Stirring, moving, motivating...but it wasn't true. It’s possible for the same thing to happen to us in a religious sense. We can get all “fired up” without much thought as to the truth of what we're getting excited about. Paul said of those who were motivated in such a way: “...they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge.” (Rom. 10:2)

Zeal is good. We all need more of it. But we need to make certain that our enthusiasm is firmly based on our knowledge of God’s will.

Something To Think About...

A boss was complaining in his staff meeting that he wasn’t getting any respect. Later that morning he went to a local sign shop and bought a small sign that read, “I’m the Boss”. He then taped it to his office door.

Later that day, when he returned from lunch, he found that someone had taped a note to the sign that said, “Your wife called, she wants her sign back!”

Everyone likes to be the boss, to be in control, to be respected. That’s the natural attitude of the world around us. But Jesus calls us to an attitude that is not very natural:

“You know that the rulers of the non-Jewish people love to show their power over the people...it should not be that way among you. Whoever wants to become great among you must serve the rest of you like a servant. Whoever wants to become first among you must serve the rest of you like a slave. ...the Son of Man did not come to be served. He came to serve others...” (Matt. 20:25-28)

Concerned that everyone be aware that you’re the boss? Be more concerned about what you can do to serve others.

Something To Think About...

A lady had been married for many years when suddenly her husband died. This is what she put on his tombstone:

THE LIGHT OF MY LIFE HAS GONE OUT.

Not long afterward she met, fell in love with and married another man. After thinking at some length about it, she went to the monument maker and had him add this to the tombstone:

THE LIGHT OF MY LIFE HAS GONE OUT.
P.S. I Found A Match.

Reminds me of what happened to the church at Ephesus. There was a lot of activity in that congregation. They were commended for their perseverance, their refusal to tolerate false doctrine, and their labor for the cause of Christ. But there was something missing. The “light of their life” had gone out. They lost the first love they had for Christ, and it had reached the point that they were doing lots of “religious works” without love as a motivator.

“Nevertheless I have this against you, that you left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works…” (Revelation 2:4-5a).

Perhaps you’ve found yourself in a similar situation. You’re doing all the “right” things, but that love you once had for Christ just isn’t there anymore. Perhaps you need to find a match and rekindle the flame. It’s important to that before the light truly goes out in our lives:
“...or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place.” (Rev. 2:5b)

May you find again your “first love”!

Something To Think About...

A little boy asked his father what was the highest number he had ever counted. Replying that he did not know, the father asked his son his highest number. It was 973.

“Why did you stop there?” wondered the father.

“Because church was over.”

I suspect that you have probably sat through worship services where your mind was focused on something just as trivial rather than on God. It’s easy to let the mind wander. “I can’t wait to see the ballgame this afternoon.” “I wander what we are having for lunch.” “I’ve never noticed before that the carpet down there is starting to unravel a bit.” Is it any wonder that we so often leave the worship assembly with the feeling that it wasn’t very meaningful?

Worship should be a time when we are confronted with the majesty and glory of God. As we reflect on God’s power, we realize how much we need Him in our times of weakness. As we reflect on God’s wisdom, we realize how much we need Him in our times of indecision. As we reflect on God’s holiness, we are made aware of our own sinfulness and the need for forgiveness. As we reflect on God’s love, we realize the effort God has gone to to make that forgiveness available.

It’s not a ritual we go through every week. It is an opportunity to express our praise to the One who means more to us than all the earth. We leave with the challenge to “be holy as He is holy.” May we worship and praise God from the heart. (Ps. 96:4-9)

Something To Think About...

The census taker knocked on the lady’s door. She answered all his questions except one. She refused to tell him her age.

“But everyone tells their age to the census taker,” he said.

“Did Miss Maisy Hill, and Miss Daisy Hill tell you their ages?” she asked.

“Certainly,” he replied.

“Well, I’m the same age as they are,” she snapped.

The census taker simply wrote on the form, “As old as the hills.”

In 1997, a 122 year old woman in France died. She was the oldest person on the earth whose birth record could be verified. A 143 year old woman in Kenya and a 135 year old man in Lebanon don’t have birth records to verify their ages, but could easily be described with the phrase, “As old as the hills.”

But they are babies when compared to Methuselah. You recognize his name. He’s known in the Bible for one thing—being the oldest person mentioned. 969 years old! That’s a lot of years. And I think it’s sad. Not that he was so old, but because that’s what he is known for. He’s not known for his great faith, for his moral courage, or for his righteousness. He’s known for being old.

I just pray that some day I’ll be remembered, not for the number of years I lived upon this earth, but for the way that I lived while I was here.

“Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life.” (Proverbs 16:31)

Something To Think About...

A little old Jewish lady is flying out of New York City on her way to Miami Beach. She looks at the businessman sitting next to her and asks him, “Excuse me sir, but are you Jewish?”
The man responds politely, “No, ma’am, I’m not Jewish.”

After a little while she again questions him. “You’re really Jewish, aren’t you?”
Again he responds, “No, ma’am, I am not Jewish.”

Barely 10 minutes later, the little old lady asks him once more, “Are you sure you’re not Jewish?”
To which, in irritation and in a final effort to shut her up, he replies, “OK. Yes, ma’am, I am Jewish.”
“Funny,” she says, looking puzzled. “You don’t look Jewish!”

Makes me wonder. If anyone approached me and asked me, “Are you a Christian?” and I answered, “Yes”, would they be inclined to say, “Funny, you don’t look like a Christian.”

I’m not talking about looking like the world’s stereotype of a Christian...a sour-looking guy with a frown on his face, not enjoying life at all. I merely wonder if my Christianity is something that can be seen by the people who see me everyday. I know what I believe, but is that belief translating into action? Can anyone tell?

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill...let your light shine before others, so they my see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16)

Do you look like a Christian?

Something To Think About…

The story is told of a young man named Peter who attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. An art student friend of his asked if he could paint Peter’s portrait for a class assignment. Peter agreed, and the art student painted and submitted the portrait, only to receive a C minus.

The art student approached the professor to ask why the grade was so poor. The teacher told him that the proportions in the painting were incorrect. “The head is too big,” the professor explained. “The shoulders are too wide, and the feet are enormous.”

The next day, the art student brought Peter to see the professor. He took one look at Peter and said, “Okay, I’ll change your grade to an A minus.”

Art students know the importance of keeping things proportioned properly. It’s also a challenge to those of us trying to live the Christian life.

Jesus was the master at keeping everything balanced in His life, but most of us struggle with it. It doesn't help that the world will always see our values as being way out of proportion, because they don’t understand that we are modeling our lives after someone with values unlike their own.

“Whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked”. (1 John 2:6)

May God bless you as you seek daily to model your life (and proportion our priorities) after Jesus Christ.

Something To Think About...

Approaching eighty-five years of age, Mrs. Wells finally decided it was time to give up her home in North Carolina and move to Miami. She was given the name of a Florida realtor, who enthusiastically drove her all over Miami, praising the qualities of every apartment they looked at.

“And this one, what a steal,” he said, “the investment of a lifetime. Why, in ten years it’s gonna be worth three times as much!”

“Sonny,” interrupted Mrs. Wells, “at my age I don’t even buy green bananas.”

Age has a way of changing our perspective on time. As teenagers, we sometimes feel that we can live forever. But every year, we come more and more to grips with the idea that life is short, and every day is to be savored.

That’s not to say that we shouldn’t plan for the future (not buying green bananas is a little extreme!), but we should always live with the realization that we’re not promised even one more day.

“Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit’; yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.’” (James 4:13-15).
May your plans for the future have God at the very center.

Weekly Update: 9/28/2011

Something To Think About...

Joe, the Governor’s most trusted assistant, died in his sleep one night. The Governor had depended on Joe for advice on every subject, from bills to wardrobe decisions. In addition, Joe had been his closest friend.

So, it was understandable that the Governor didn’t take kindly to the ambitious office seekers who wanted Joe’s job. “They don’t even have the decency to wait until the man is buried,” the Governor muttered.

At the funeral, one eager man made his way to the Governor’s side. “Governor,” the man said, “is there a chance that I could take Joe’s place?”

“Certainly,” the governor replied. “But you’d better hurry. I think the undertaker is almost finished.”

I’m sure we have all said at one time or another, “I would like to take his/her place.” But I dare say that you have never made that statement of someone who had died, or was about to die. Why would anyone want to trade places with someone like that? It is for that reason that God’s love for us is so difficult to comprehend, for that is exactly what Jesus did for us.
“He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. (Isaiah 53:5-6)

May our lives be forever lived in gratitude for the one who “took our place”.

Something To Think About...

A teenage girl got lost in her car in a snowstorm. She remembered what her dad had once told her: “If you ever get stuck in a snowstorm, wait for a snowplow and follow it.” Pretty soon a snowplow came by, and she started to follow it. She followed the plow for about forty-five minutes. Finally the driver of the truck got out and asked her what she was doing. She explained that her dad had told her if she ever got stuck in the snow, to follow a plow.

The driver nodded and said, “Well, I’m done with the Wal-mart parking lot, now you can follow me over to K-mart.”

There’s nothing wrong with following others as long as we know that they are headed in the right direction. Even the apostle Paul was careful to limit those who sought to follow him. “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.”(1Corinthians11:1,ESV)

Following a snowplow blindly may have minor consequences, but following someone blindly in the realm of religion can have serious (and eternal consequences. Be careful who you follow!

Final Thought: Decision-making
In recent years, the word “values” has come into popularity in society. Much acclaim is made regarding our society being value-centered. In reality, values are Biblical principles. God’s word has the answers for today’s society.

The Bible provides direction and guidance for every choice we make in life. God’s word is “a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our paths.” (Psalm 119:105)

Whether we have immediate decisions or long-term planning, God’s word will guide us. May you influence your family to make Christ-honoring and Bible-based decisions!

Weekly Update: 9/7/2011

Back to School Bash: BTSB was a great success. We had over 40 teens and parents attend. They played laser tag, climbed the rock wall and drove the go-karts. Reagan Rushing lead our devotional singing and Chase Pope gave our devotional talk.

Upcoming Events:

On Saturday, September 17th, a youth / KFC car wash will be held for our Golden Agers at the building from 10 AM -2 PM.

On Sunday, September 18th, a youth devo will be hosted by the Martin family.

On Sunday, September 25th, we will welcome our youth minister, Rick Williams and his family after the evening service. Everyone is invited to stop by and say hi.

Final Thought: Distinction

-Why be different? God commands it, holiness requires it and Biblical examples confirm it.

-When to be different? Deuteronomy 6 tells us to teach our children to glorify God when we lie down, rise up, stay home or go out into the way.

-How to be different? Decide to follow Jesus by developing the mind of Christ (Phil 2:5) Determine not to conform to the world’s pressure (Romans 12: 1,2).

-What causes the difference? Living a holy lifestyle is not difficult when one is motivated by their love for the Lord. Paul’s admonition was to walk to please God (1 Thess. 4:1).

-Jesus reminds us that we are to shine our lights in the world (Matthew 5: 13-16). Only light is distinct from darkness. Does God see our distinction?

Weekly Update: 8/31/2011

Family Work Day: On Saturday we had 22 people put in over 100 hours of work at Foster’s Children’s Home. We participated in outdoor clean-up projects. We had dinner and a devotional with the Foster Home families.

Family Game Night: Good times rolled at FGN. Almost 60 people were in attendance. We played the game Bunco. Our own David Sanders directed our devotional and he did an outstanding job.

Back-to-School Bash: On Sunday, September 4th, we will be going to Celebration Station in Mesquite. Cost is $25 per person which includes food and attractions. If you want, you may bring extra money. It is $5 for Laser Tag and $2 for the Rock Climbing Wall. We will meet at 3:00 PM and return around 9:30 PM. Everyone is invited, including parents. Parents, it’s only $8 if you only want to eat.

Upcoming Events:

  • Saturday, September 17th - youth / KFC car wash will be held for our Golden Agers at the building from 10:00 AM -2:00 PM.

  • Sunday, September 18th -youth devo hosted by the Martin family.

  • Sunday, September 25th -Cici’s Pizza Family Night

Final Thought: Life is complex and obedience is not as simple as doing one thing or its exact opposite. God’s principles are clear-cut but living them is not. We make hundreds, perhaps thousands of choices everyday. Decisions made in a moment can affect a lifetime. Proverbs 3: 5-6 states, “Trust in the Lord with thine heart; and lean not into thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him.” Placing confidence in the Lord simplifies life and makes it easier. Proverbs 28:26 says, “He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, but he who walks wisely will be delivered.”

Final Thought: Be careful in the attitudes we feed our children. No matter how intelligent, talented or athletic a child may be. . .there’s no substitute for a child having a positive attitude towards others. Let’s not feed our children with sour opinions, poisonous feelings or wilted enthusiasm. Instead feed them with the best and positive ideas, expressions of feeling and opinions we have. Proverbs 20:7 states “ the just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.”
